Exhibition catalog (8.5 x 11 inches, 130 pages)
Style of Shanghai, is an exhibition organized by the Shanghai History Museum, presenting artworks and historical documents of the past 150 years. Through these representative works, the exhibition draws a general overview of the cultural evolution of Shanghai.
The economic growth and the influx of Western culture brought new arts such as oil painting, watercolor, gouache, and comics. Commercial and package arts, including advertisements, posters, book design, and illustrated publications, gradually became more popular. Illustrated calendars especially appealed to Shanghai townspeople, and woodcuts pointedly addressed political issues during the wars.
The exhibition also encompasses works of ink and colors, oil, woodcuts, and video from the late 1950s to present day—depicting daily life and the fresh atmosphere of the new China.
